QR Code Not Working
Guests having trouble scanning your QR code? Here's how to fix it.
Common Scanning Problems
Camera Won't Recognize the QR Code
If the phone camera doesn't detect the QR code:
- Check the size - QR codes smaller than 1.5 inches (4cm) can be hard to scan
- Improve lighting - Make sure the QR code is well-lit, not in shadow
- Reduce glare - If laminated, angle the code to avoid reflections
- Hold steady - Keep the phone still while scanning
- Get closer/further - Optimal distance is usually 4-10 inches (10-25cm)
QR Code is Blurry or Damaged
Print quality matters:
- Reprint from the original high-resolution download
- Don't resize QR codes in word processors (can cause blurring)
- Use a quality printer—inkjet smearing can affect scanning
- Replace damaged or wrinkled printouts
Pro Tip
Always test your printed QR code before the event! Have a few people try scanning it with different phones to make sure it works.
Phone-Specific Issues
iPhone
iPhones have built-in QR scanning in the Camera app:
- Open the Camera app (not a third-party scanner)
- Point at the QR code
- Tap the notification that appears at the top
If it's not working:
- Go to Settings → Camera → make sure "Scan QR Codes" is enabled
- Try using the Control Center QR scanner instead
Android
Most modern Android phones scan QR codes through the camera:
- Open the Camera app
- Point at the QR code
- Tap the link that appears
If it's not working:
- Try Google Lens (tap the Lens icon in the camera)
- Some phones need a dedicated QR scanner app
- Check camera settings for QR code options
Older Phones
Phones from before 2018 may need a QR scanner app. Recommend guests download a free scanner from their app store, or simply share the direct link instead.
Alternative: Share the Direct Link
If QR scanning isn't working, share your event link directly:
- Text or WhatsApp the link to guests
- Write the short link on a sign near the QR code
- Post it in an event group chat
Your event link is available on your dashboard—just click "Copy Link".
QR Code Leads to Wrong Page
If the QR code opens but shows the wrong event or an error:
- Make sure you're using the QR code for the correct event
- Download a fresh QR code from your dashboard
- Check that your event hasn't expired (past retention period)
Environmental Issues
Dark Venues
In dimly lit venues, phones may struggle to see the QR code. Solutions:
- Place QR codes near light sources (candles, string lights)
- Use white paper to maximize contrast
- Consider backlit displays or phone flashlight
Outdoor Events
Direct sunlight can cause glare on laminated QR codes:
- Place in shaded areas
- Use matte lamination instead of glossy
- Angle codes to reduce sun reflection
